Tungsten Medical radiation shielding protection Assessment Unit

Medical radiation technologists

MRTs are integral members of the healthcare team who perform diagnostic imaging examinations and administer radiation therapy treatments. They choose to specialize in one or more of the four disciplines of medical imaging and radiation science: general radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, or radiation therapy. Upon completion of a Canadian Tungsten Medical radiation shielding Association (CMA) accredited education program that includes both didactic and clinical components at a college or university, graduates are well versed in the application of imaging and therapeutic technologies. Their course of study includes anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, radiation protection and patient care. Once they have completed their formal education, they are eligible to write the national certification examination administered by the CAMRT. Internationally-educated MRTs must have graduated from an educational program that is assessed to be substantially similar to a CMA-accredited program and must also pass the CAMRT certification examination in their field of specialization.

The mission of the UEM is to manage studies and assessments for health professionals, patients and more generally, the population concerned by the radiological impact of the medical sector.

contributes to better understanding of the nature and frequency of exposure associated with medical actions by setting up an observation unit in partnership with the InVS
Participates in production of regulations and standards in the field of medical radiation protection
Participates in training of health professionals
Participates in defining diagnostic reference levels in radiology and nuclear medicine and is in charge of gathering and updating them
Assesses the dosimetric impact of innovative technical examinations and new therapeutic protocols.

This unit intervenes at the request of health professionals, to advise and assist them, amongst other things:
For dosimetric assessments for pregnant patients exposed to ionizing radiation
For validation of dosimetric information indicated by radiology equipment
For production of quality control and dosimetry procedures in all fields using ionizing radiation in medicine
For practical application of regulations both for patients and for medical personnel
For workstation studies
By distributing information documents.
